RE students, families support Breakthrough Miami

More than two dozen Ransom Everglades students and a host of RE families turned out to volunteer on a Breakthrough Miami Saturday Nov. 23, leading dozens of Breakthrough Scholars in a host of electives and academic classes. The scholars learned, played, performed and had a terrific time. Watch RE students share their gifts in this video.
RE students provided instruction in coding, robotics, art, baking and decorating, medicine, speech and debate, dance, volleyball, soccer, chess and basketball. They also offered tutoring and academic enrichment classes, and RE families prepared and served lunch as part of the school's volunteer Healthy Lunch Initiative.

The Breakthrough Saturdays take place about once monthly, drawing a variety of volunteers from RE. Many of the students who participated on Nov. 23 were members of the school's Breakthrough Miami club; others came from RE's robotics teams, the upper school Charitable Arts club, and the speech and debate team.

Breakthrough Miami, which was founded nearly 30 years ago by two RE alumni, relies on student teachers to provide academic enrichment opportunities to under-resourced elementary and middle school students to ensure they are positioned to graduate high school and attend college. The organization has operated on RE's campuses since its earliest days, though it has expanded to various sites throughout South Florida and nationwide.
