Team Hangs Tough in Third Game of 2020

The week started off with a game against a tough opponent Westminster Christian School and 4 freshwomen heading to the Everglades for their Outward Bound experience.  The team fought hard in a physical game but lost 7-2 to the Warriors. The coaches were very impressed with their spirit and effort; and reminded the team that this score was an improvement from the game in November.

The girls started off playing well defensively not allowing many shots nor any scoring chances.  Since this was the second time playing this opponent, the team knew what to expect and how to counteract it.  Strong defense up the middle and distributing the ball wide to use the space to get into the forward half of the field.  Yet most of the game was played in the Raider half with occasional forays forward utilizing the wings. While the team was able to get some shots on goal Westminster had more.  Kati Ortega '22 stood tall in net making save after save until the 15th minute when the Warriors got in behind the defense and finished the opportunity with a low hard shot. The game continued the same way until right before half when Westminster had a corner kick and a Raider player mistakenly knocked the ball into her own goal.  Westminster went into halftime leading 2-0.

The second half started off better for the Raiders as Jamie Sanford '20 and Grace Arriola '21 continued to clog up their play through the middle.  In the 6th minute Sanford ‘20 won possession and sent a long diagonal ball into the offensive half. Lily Kaplan ‘22 ran onto it and blasted a shot with her left foot past the goalkeeper.  An early score wasn’t a surprise as a large percentage of goals are scored in the first five minutes of halves or right after an opponent scores. This caused the Warriors to resume their quick passing play and began to pressure the Raider goal.  The defense and goalkeeper held up until giving up goals on two corner kicks for a 4-1 score line at the second water break. As the half wore on and due to injury the team played with no substitutes. As a result, the Raiders gave up more scoring opportunities that lead to three more goals.  Yet the team kept working the ball down to the Warriors end of the field and trying to score. With under a minute, the team won a corner kick which was taken with :16 seconds remaining. After the initial chance was partially cleared to the top of the box Daniela Pineros ‘21 stepped up and first timed a low shot through traffic for a goal right at the buzzer.

Though the team lost and was banged up after a very physical game; the coaches expressed their admiration for the players’ effort, pushing themselves to exhaustion and fighting spirit.  The team has two days of recovery and practice then play again on Thursday at Archbishop McCarthy, 4pm.
