Retiring teachers receive sign surprises

When Ransom Everglades' four retiring faculty members answered their doors on May 29, they were greeted by grinning students bearing bags of gifts and congratulatory signs. The students partnered with the Ransom Everglades Parents' Association to recognize departing English teacher Mike Townsend (44 years in teaching, five at RE); world languages teacher Maria del Carmen Naranjo (18 years at RE); world languages teacher Guillermo Urbina (28 years at RE); and physical education teacher and coach Penny Matthews (34 years at RE).
The goodies included a book, dry-fit polo with the REtired logo, an RE pen and, for a laugh or two, REtirement Papers (a roll of toilet paper). Ali Murray '23, Alexa Hommen '22, Daniel Mendoza '21 and Shellie Perdigon, REPA's staff liaison, assisted with the surprise deliveries. RE parent Neto Mendoza created the signs, which stated that "A truly great teacher is hard to find and impossible to forget!"
