Internet safety lessons for MS families

Richard Guerry, founder of the Institute for Responsible Online and Cell-Phone Communications, advocated for a thoughtful use of the internet and warned about common missteps during a required webinar for sixth- and seventh-grade students and their parents on October 22. His primary message: Limit risk on the internet and social media by building sound cyber habits and digital mindfulness.
Guerry, who had previously addressed Ransom Everglades middle schoolers at Swenson Hall, touched on topics ranging from cyber cruelty to gaming to hacking. He called the notion of privacy settings an oxymoron; he advised families to treat such settings as transparency or visibility settings. Hundreds of children and their parents tuned into to the webinar together, many submitting questions.

“This is not a screen, this is a window to the world,” Guerry said, holding up his smart phone. “Windows work two ways; if there is a connection out; there is likely a way in.”

Guerry’s annual visit represents a part of the school’s larger effort to ensure the health and wellness of its students. For more information, check out Guerry’s website.
