Two district titles for RE water polo
A year ago, the undefeated girls’ water polo team at Ransom Everglades was closing in on a likely 15th straight district title when COVID-19 abruptly ended spring sports. The Raiders finally earned the chance to extend their streak at the Ansin Aquatic Center on March 26, and claimed resounding 13-5 victory over MAST Academy. Two hours later, RE’s boys defeated Columbus High by a 21-10 margin to give Ransom Everglades two district championships in one day.
Sabrina Shipley ’22 and Holly Alesandro ’23 each scored four goals, Mary Logan Woolsey ’22 scored two and Alexa Hommen '22 had six steals to lead the Raiders in the district final. Camille Devaney ’21, the team’s only senior, and Eleonora Cavallini '23 each stopped five shots.
The boys, district runners-up in 2019, were led by Lucas Gomez ’21, who tallied six goals, three steals and two assists, and Geromino Carom ’22 and Paolo Rebessi '23, who each scored five times. Pablo Rodriguez-Russowsky '23 had three goals, three assists and two steals, and Rebessi chipped in four assists. Coren O’Brien ’23 tallied 10 saves.

In the semifinal games at the Ansin Pool earlier that day, Amanda Harris ’22 and Woolsey led the girls with five goals apiece as Hommen added five steals and Shipley five assists in a 23-3 defeat of Miami High. Ten Raiders scored in that game. In the boys’ semifinal, Rebessi scored six goals, had two assists and six steals, and Gomez scored five goals with four assists to lead the Raiders over Coral Gables by a 28-2 score in a contest that featured goals by 12 Raiders.
Entering the regional playoffs, the girls' team is 6-1 and the boys' team, 7-1. Both teams are led by RE math and computer science teacher Eric Lefebvre.
