Raiders finish second at national championships

Ransom Everglades sailing was the proud host of the 2021 ISSA High School Team Race Baker Trophy National Championship. Twelve high school teams from across the country competed in the event after qualifying to participate in the national championship regatta. Challenging wind conditions made for very athletic racing, and great viewing for those lucky enough to see the event. The format for the event was as follows. Team racing consisted of three boat vs three boat short races around buoys.  Racing tactics and boat handling skills made for a fast paced weekend of racing.
Day one of the championships saw a grand total of 66 races that featured all 12 teams sailing against each other once in a qualifying round robin.  By day's end it was the Raiders who held first place with the Antilles School in second. At the beginning of day two teams were divided into three divisions (gold, silver, bronze) of four teams for the championships rounds.  All of the teams put their best foot forward  with heated and emotional battles in every race. Time only allowed for a single rotation for the championship.  Ransom Everglades won its races against the Severn School, (Maryland) and Christ Church (Virginia), but lost to its strongest competitors and historic rivals,  previous national champs, the Antilles School (US Virgin Islands).
Both teams finished the championship round tied with matching records 12-2.  This lead to a a best of three sail off tie breaker. With a national championship on the line all three races were highly contested with the Antilles School winning race one. The Raiders would respond beautifully in race two with a win of their own to tie things up. The third and final race would see both team get off to a good start before the Antilles School would pull away late clinching the 2021 national championship. Congratulations go out to coach Logan, his staff, and the incredible athletes who competed this weekend. #reproud
