Grandparents enjoy special day on RE's campuses
Nearly 500 grandparents enjoyed attending classes with their grandchildren during Grandparents and Special Friends Day at the middle school on February 15 or at upper school on February 16 – or at both events. Grandparents fanned out on both campuses after assembling for a light brunch and remarks from school leaders, heading to classrooms with their grandchildren where they participated in round-table discussions, asked questions, donned lab coats and, in some cases, offered to help teach the material.

At the upper school, grandparents heard from Head of the Upper School Patricia C.A. Sasser, Student Government Association member Alexa Hommen ’22 and Head of School Penny Townsend. At the middle school, they were greeted by Interim Head of School Karen Thompson, student government member Lucas Jaffee ’26 and the head of school, who offered encouragement about the progress students had made despite the global pandemic.

“Your grandchildren have advanced academically, artistically and athletically,” Townsend said. “For the most part, they have thrived in a difficult environment.
“They have demonstrated the grit and resilience that comes from being part of a school older than Miami itself – and,” she continued, “from being part of a school that emphasizes thinking critically, acting with purpose, embracing differences, develop a global perspective, showing commitment to the common good, and demonstrating gratitude at every opportunity.”
The middle school welcomed 313 grandparents and the upper school, 240. Grandparents attended two classes with their grandchildren before departing.
