Top athletes and seniors recognized at Upper School Sports Celebration

Felipe de Cardenas ’22 and Kathryn Serra ’23 were named Ransom Everglades’ Overall Outstanding Athletes for 2021-22 and 12 other student-athletes received major awards at the Upper School Sports Celebration on May 16. The school also celebrated 15 seniors planning to pursue sports in college and recognized every upper school sports team and senior student-athlete at the event that drew several hundred athletes and guests to the Lewis Family Auditorium.

Coaches from each varsity sport shared season highlights, called the names of departing seniors and presented awards or college recognitions to their student-athletes. Head of School Penny Townsend opened the event, and Director of Athletics and Physical Education Corey Goff served as emcee. At the end of the night, senior student-athletes and college-bound athletes gathered on stage for photos.

The honorees:

Overall Outstanding Athletes
This award goes to the student-athlete whose overall contribution to the Ransom Everglades athletic community has been the greatest, demonstrated in significant athletic accomplishments, the tireless pursuit of excellence, and outstanding leadership skills and motivational abilities.

Athletic Performance Award
This award goes to an athlete who exhibits superior performance in at least one Ransom Everglades sponsored sport, and demonstrates fierce competitiveness, the ability to perform under pressure, exceptional leadership and motivational skills, and accomplishments in other sports or outside activities.

Scholar Athlete Award
This individual who embodies the true meaning of “scholar athlete.” This student-athlete excels in the classroom and athletic arena, expertly balancing the demands of a rigorous academic education and varsity sports schedule to serve as a model for peers and stellar representative of the school.

Team of the Year Award
This award is given to a team that has achieved a high level of success in athletic competition. The team demonstrates an attitude of fair play and consistently upholds Ransom Everglades’ high standard for honor and excellence.

Sportsmanship Award 
The award goes to a student-athlete who demonstrates the highest level of character and integrity. A team player who is as humble as competitive. This student- athlete is respectful towards teammates, officials, opponents and coaches.

Comeback Player of the Year
This award goes to an individual who demonstrates grit and resilience in coming back from an injury from the previous season, offseason or current season, and who makes a significant impact on the team upon returning. This individual supports the team even while unable to contribute in the competitive arena, and exhibits a positive spirit, determination and a no-quit attitude throughout the rehabilitation process.

REACH Service Award
The REACH (Ransom Everglades Athletes Can Help) program was started in 2007-08. This award recognizes the individual/team that has gone above and beyond the norm of community service and is a true model of the values on which Paul C. Ransom founded Ransom Everglades.
Alexa Hommen ’22 (water polo, swimming)

Penny Matthews Award
This award goes to the well-rounded student-athlete who demonstrates the spirit of competition while prioritizing involvement in the school and local communities, always giving 100 percent in the classroom, school life, the community and athletics. A unique mix.

Founded in 1903, Ransom Everglades School is a coeducational, college preparatory day school for grades 6 - 12 located on two campuses in Coconut Grove, Florida. Ransom Everglades School produces graduates who "believe that they are in the world not so much for what they can get out of it as for what they can put into it."
