RE Director of Environmental Sustainability attends climate summit
RE Director of Environmental Sustainability Kelly Jackson joined some 35,000 delegates from nearly 200 nations at the Nov. 6-20 United Nations World Climate Conference COP27 in Sharm El-Sheikh, Egypt. Jackson represented Ransom Everglades, the Miami Youth Climate Summit and We are Forces of Nature, and she took part in the push for meaningful climate action while also attending various educational training sessions expected to benefit her work with RE students.
During the two-week event, Jackson attended press conferences and engaged with delegates at the pavilions offered by various nations while interacting with peers from across the globe. She heard messages from countless ministers, sustainability directors and ambassadors. A STEM Department teacher at RE, Jackson was credentialed under an NGO Observer badge with We Are Forces of Nature, the climate non-profit founded and run by RE student climate activist Will Charouhis '24, who was unable to attend this year.

"It was an incredible experience meeting people from all over the world," Dr. Jackson said. "I got to see world leaders speak, from John Kerry, U.S. Special Presidential Envoy for Climate, to Mary Robinson, first woman president of Ireland and former United Nations High Commissioner for Human Rights."
Added Jackson: "I also attended education training sessions I plan to incorporate into my classes or future classes at RE. It was incredible to be with so many people fighting for the same thing."
The conference, whose theme was "Together for Implementation," concluded with a commitment to creating a fund for loss and damage from climate change, though many details have yet to be worked out. The conference also fell short on setting a firm timeline for phasing out fossil fuels.
Jackson said she particularly enjoyed the inaugural “Children and Youth” pavilion where youth from around the world had the opportunity to voice their climate concerns. Said Jackson: "Their stories were incredible and inspiring and humbling."
