Juniors and seniors launch the Health Information Project at RE

More than 50 Ransom Everglades juniors and seniors opened a series of peer-to-peer meetings with RE ninth graders on Oct. 5, fanning out to classrooms on the upper school campus to deliver important information on health and wellness. The student leaders, known as Peer Health Educators, trained for the leadership roles under the direction of the Health Information Project (HIP), a Miami-based health education organization founded in 2009 by Risa Berrin '98 that is in its eighth year at RE.
The Peer Health Educators will cover topics ranging from substance abuse to depression, providing the ninth-grade students with valuable information and a safe space to talk about their experiences and concerns. RE faculty member Karen Key serves as the HIP advisor, but adults do not participate in the sessions.

The HIP model is preventive, not reactive, and HIP has partnered with more than 100 schools across the state of Florida and beyond, serving more than 425,000 students since its founding.
