Ethics roundtable series debuts at RE upper school
Ransom Everglades students and faculty gathered for a lunchtime roundtable on Oct. 13 with Dr. Kenneth M. Zide, a cardiac electrophysiologist, for the first in a series of medical ethics discussions in 2023-24. The roundtable, moderated by Associate Head of School John A. King Jr., provided a platform for thoughtful analyses of several issues at the intersection of medicine, healthcare and profit. Zide and the students reviewed case studies involving Theranos, Turing and Johnson & Johnson.
The new series is a part of the expanded programming available through the Holzman Center of Applied Ethics, which opened at Ransom Everglades late in 2021 to arm students with the tools, knowledge and mindset for ethical leadership and decision-making. King is the director of the program; Steve Holzman, a former parent chair for The Fund For RE, provided the founding grant.
"It is the intention of nobody to deliver on manifesto on ethics," King said to open the roundtable discussion. "But rather for us to work through together whatever ethical topics are raised by the case studies."
