Aquaponics tank up and running

"Team Tilapia," a team of National Science Honor Society students under the tutelage of Cecilia Calleros '94, worked throughout the summer to assemble and prepare RE's new 400-gallon aquaponics tank; they then trained ninth-grade biology teachers on how to take care of the tank during the first week of school.
During the summer, the students populated the aquaponics tank with plants and monitored the system. In the coming weeks – as the plants grow, bacteria builds and the water quality reaches desired levels – tilapia will be added. The system is designed to be self-sustaining; the plants and fish will clean the water and provide food for each other.

The ultimate goal: to serve a meal of fish and vegetables to the student body by the end of the school year.
