RE alumni musicians return to campus

Two accomplished Ransom Everglades alumni - Mike Malinin ’85 and Dan Calkins ’15 - are making some noise on campus. Both are returning as guest music instructors for another year, exemplifying The RE Way and RE's school’s core value of Support & Community.
While many recognize Malinin from his years with the Goo Goo Dolls, his musical journey began at RE, where he was an all-state timpanist. In a true full-circle moment, he shared his expertise with the next generation of Ransom Everglades performers. He will work closely with the school's Jazz Combo ensembles and drum set musicians throughout the year, offering valuable guidance and feedback.

Following his time at RE, Calkins double-majored in jazz trumpet performance and pre-med at the University of Miami. When he’s not hitting the books at USF’s Morsani College of Medicine, you can find him performing with the Tampa-based jazz trio he formed. A familiar face on campus, Calkins frequently returns as an alumnus to play in the orchestra for school musicals and year-end band performances. Students are excited to have him as their coach.
