RE musicians display range and skill at Major Works Concert

From a light-hearted opening piece by the Advanced Chamber String Quartet to a rousing encore by the new RE Symphony Orchestra, Ransom Everglades' Major Works Concert displayed the growing range, skill and depth of the school's upper school performing arts program. Winds, strings, brass and percussion musicians and vocalists performed highly regarded works in small groups and large ensembles, culminating in three pieces from the new 50+-member orchestra.

Director of Arts Shawn Costantino emceed the event, and RE performing arts faculty Jon Hamm, Scott O’Donnell and Laura Montes each served as conductor at various points. Hamm also presented two major end-of-year music awards: Eleonora Cavallini ’23 received the Leonard Bernstein Musicianship Award, and Leah Maduro ’23, the RE band president, received the Bill Pender Service Award.

The directors also recognized graduating seniors Antonia Awad ’23, Arjun Badwal ’23, Max Bast ’23; Cavallini, Sebastian Daire ’23, John Devaney ’23, Nicolas Goldberg ’23, Theodore Ma ’23, Maduro, Rogelio Munoz ’23, Annabelle Sanders ’23, Christian Sosa ’23, Nico Sosa ’23, Taylen Toomer ’23, Sofia Wolf ’23, Max Wolfe ’23, Lena Zide ’23. “What we have achieved with this class and these seniors is really remarkable,” Hamm said.

The crowd of several hundred included about 50 grandparents and alumni who had attended the April 21-23 Alumni Weekend festivities. The performance was the second for the new symphony orchestra and vocal ensemble, both of which were introduced in 2022-23. “This can only be described as a resounding, amazing first year,” Costantino said.

The Advanced Chamber String Quartet played Dvorak’s “American Quartet,” and the String Orchestra followed with pieces from Mozart and Handel. The RE String Quartet followed with Phillip Glass’s “Company,” and the Advanced Chamber Ensemble performed pieces by Handel and Brian Balmages. The RE Vocal Ensemble performed five pieces, including two from the recent RE musical: Rodgers and Hammerstein’s Cinderella. A highlight were Movements 1-2 of Vivaldi’s Gloria. The Symphonic Band and Symphony Orchestra concluded the event; the finale was Movement 4 of Berlioz’s Symphonie Fantastique.
