Seniors win national title in rowing
Kathryn Serra '23 and Florine Lijesen '23 won a national title in the girls' varsity double in the Scholastic Rowing Association of America (SRAA) National Championship Regatta May 26-27 in Oak Ridge, Tenn., continuing a season of dominance and giving Ransom Everglades one of its biggest victories ever in the sport. The prestigious championship regatta drew 414 entries and 137 teams from across the nation.
Serra and Lijesen entered among the top seeds after their first-place finishes at state and regional championships in recent weeks. The pair won their opening heat with a come-from-behind victory, then repeated the thrilling finish in the event's final.
In fourth place with just over 500 meters remaining, Serra and Lijesen charged through the field, crossing the finish line with a lead of nearly two seconds to secure the championship in 5 minutes, 42.479 seconds. They defeated second-place Albemarle High School of Charlottesville, Va. (5:44.097), and third-place West Albemarle High from Crozet, Va. (5:46.275). Watch the race here (starts at 5:38.12 mark).
They were supported at the event by RE coaches Richie Fredericks, Tim McAllister and Alexandra Gunner. The victory added to Serra's and Lijesen's impressive list of accomplishments throughout the season. Prior to their national triumph, they clinched the top position at the FSRA Sculling States and emerged victorious at the USRowing Southeast Regionals, cementing their status as one of the top girls' youth 2x in the country.

Serra and Lijesen will close out their RE careers at the June 8-11 USRowing Youth National Championships in Sarasota. Serra committed to row at Harvard University and Lijesen at Duke University.
