Business Directory Spotlight: Terron Ferguson '04

Name: Terron Ferguson

Class Year: 2004

Business Name: YANCY Holdings, Inc.

Job Title: Chief Executive Officer (CEO)

Where did you go to college/university: Morehouse College (2008), The London School of Economics and Political Science (2011) and New York University School of Law (2015)

What were your majors: B.A. Philosophy, Masters in Economic Policy and Juris Doctorate (J.D.)

Where do you currently reside: Miami, Florida (Brownsville)

What keeps you busy during the week: I spend the lion’s share of my time building YANCY, our family business. When I am not working, I am savoring every moment of being newly-engaged (I love my fiancée!) and playing with my dogs.

How did Ransom Everglades prepare you for your future: Ransom Everglades prepared me for my future with its rigorous intellectual training. The RE environment enabled me to practice discipline, to stress-test my work ethic, and to develop an appreciation for delayed gratification. It was my exposure to entrepreneurship in the 8th grade, however, that widened my aperture, set my sights on bigger goals, and changed my future trajectory.

One weekend my very first friend at Ransom Everglades invited me to sleep over at his house. Before this visit, aside from on television, I had never seen such wealth, ease of lifestyle, and camaraderie amongst family members. More than their mansion, luxury cars, and housekeepers, I found myself impressed – downright fascinated – by the sense of peace and palpable joy that filled their household. My religious upbringing imparted on me the notion that money is not life’s end-all be-all. Still, I correlated their happiness to a freedom from struggle that could only be facilitated by access to money.

At the dinner table, I asked my friend’s parents what they did for a living. They responded, “We run our family business – we’re entrepreneurs.” For my next five years on RE’s campus, I informally interviewed as many of my classmates as I could. I wanted to know if their families owned businesses. If they did, I wanted to know in what industries or sectors they worked. I studied their origin stories as much as I could. Despite neither knowing how I would become an entrepreneur nor in what ways I would create value, RE prepared me for a career in business by showing me my proverbial North Star. In hindsight, I realize it is no coincidence that I am now building my own private equity firm.

What is your favorite Ransom Everglades memory? I have three favorite RE memories. Listed in no particular order, they are: (1) Coach Dave Hewett’s speeches at the end of every football practice; (2) participating in the weeklong cultural exchange program at Miami Northwestern Senior High School; and (3) traveling to Hawaii with Dr. Don Cramp’s environmental science group (even though my fondest memory is of selling Krispy Kreme doughnuts every morning in the Breezeway in order to fundraise for my trip, Lol!)

What song was on repeat your senior year?
Song: Public Service Announcement (interlude)
Artist: Jay Z
Album: The Black Album

Words of wisdom for your fellow alumni: Don’t wait until you move back to Miami – like I did – to get involved in the RE alumni community.
