RE students travel overseas during winter break
Ransom Everglades students enjoyed educational excursions to Japan and Taiwan (upper school) and Puerto Rico (seventh and eighth graders) during the February winter break. The cultural immersion and service learning trips allowed students to explore the history, food, music, languages, natural beauty and architecture of their destination countries while also getting to know their classmates better and developing independence as young travelers.
Upper school students traveled with World Languages Department Chair James Monk and Chinese teacher Xiaohong Teng. Their trip was anchored in stops at Tokyo and Taipei, where they visited a host of sites including the Shibuya Sky Tower, the Taipei Lantern Festival, teamLab Planets (light show) and Chiang Kai-shek Memorial Hall. They enjoyed traditional meals, visited museums, hiked, rode bicycles, and more.
"Each day the students completed reflection tasks on what they observed and experienced," Monk said. "I was really impressed by their ability to communicate successfully in Chinese with native speakers in authentic contexts, and it was amazing for all of us to see first-hand how the Lunar New Year is celebrated."

The middle school travelers explored much of the island under the direction of world languages teacher Kristina Villa del Rey. They visited Old San Juan and Fort San Cristobal; El Yunque rainforest; Luquillo Beach; Piñones; and Yauco. They enjoyed a boat tour of La Parguera's biobay with a bioluminescent bay tour at sunset. They also toured the Finca Don Manuel Tropical Fruit Farm at San Isabel, participated in a Bomba dance workshop and took a Mofongo cooking class.
"The middle school trip to Puerto Rico was a wonderful experience, for students and chaperones alike, and I am proud of their efforts in the service learning project they completed in Ponce," Villa del Rey said. "The students were fully immersed in the culture and natural beauty of Puerto Rico and my hope is that this is only the beginning for them as young independent travelers and citizens of the world."
