Student Exchange Trip to France

Exchange Trip to Nimes, France

The Nîmes exchange is intended to introduce students to French culture, language and life by living with a French family, attending classes at a French high school and visiting historic sites in and around Nîmes, France. This trip will take place from June 8 to June 19, 2019. Ransom Everglades students later reciprocate, hosting students from Nîmes.  In the fall of 2019, the French students will live with their exchange family, visit the Ransom campus, and take local day excursions.

Nîmes is a unique city of 300,000 inhabitants located in the South of France about a half hour drive from the Mediterranean Sea. Nîmes' uniqueness stems from its origins as a Roman outpost complete with a preserved Roman arena, a temple and the most significant Roman aqueduct ever built - Le Pont du Gard.

There are multiple historic sites to visit in addition to the beautiful city of Nîmes, with its quaint medieval streets and courtyards.

Nearby excursions include day trips to prehistoric caves with drawings in the Auvergne region; Baux de Provence, a medieval city perched on a mountain side and its nearby Carrières de Lumières Museum of Art; the Pont du Gard Roman aqueduct; and to visit local markets, museums and monuments. Learn more about Nimes here.
The Nîmes sister high school dates back to the time of Napoleon and its structure is considered historic. The region is noted for its natural beauty and sunny, dry climate similar to Southern California. Nîmes is also well known for its Provençal cuisine which everyone enjoys. All excursions planned are within a short distance of Nîmes and students are able to return daily to their home base with their exchange family.

The philosophy behind this exchange is a total immersion in French with the objective of improving fluency, vocabulary and cultural awareness.

The previous trips have been very well attended and the feedback from students and families, on both sides of the Atlantic, has been very positive. Contact Mrs. Dominique McKenna via email for additional information.
